Phishing is an activity that criminals use to gain sensitive consumer information by using recognizable and trustworthy names to convince consumers to give up their non-public personal information. Phishers often send mass emails indicating a need for the consumer to confirm some sensitive information or run the risk of losing access to a particular service. These emails will direct the consumer to a spoofed website set up to replicate a legitimate website the consumer may use in the course of normal day to day business. This website will request that the consumer confirm their personal information including: account numbers, passwords, screen names and financial details. This information will then be used to compromise the consumer’s financial accounts and steal money or commit identity theft. Receiving a phishing email is a matter of chance and does not mean that your data at the impersonated institution has been compromised. How can you protect yourself?
To avoid being caught in an online scam follow these easy steps: - Do not reply to email or pop-up messages that ask for personal or financial information, and don’t click on any links contained in the message. Legitimate companies will never ask for this information via email.
- Be cautious about opening any attachments or downloading files from any email you receive regardless of who sent it.
- If a message asks for you to call a phone number to provide your information do not respond. Please call a phone number you have received on correspondence you know is legitimate like a monthly statement.
- Use Anti- Virus and Anti-Spyware software on you computer and make sure all of your computers security patches are up to date.
- Review credit card and bank statements promptly. If your statements are more then a few days late contact you bank to confirm your billing address and account balances.
